Prof.ssa Giordana Bucchioni
Abstract of the PhD project: Attitude control represents one of the most critical challenges for the effective operation of High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS). This study proposes innovative hardware and software solutions applied to the µHAPS platform, focusing on the development of a comprehensive Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) system designed to ensure stability and pointing accuracy in a harsh stratospheric environment. The research details the integration of Robust and Adaptive Control techniques to mitigate external disturbances and model uncertainties. Furthermore, it presents a study on Kalman Filters for precise state estimation and sensor fusion, alongside a preliminary hypothesis on the application of Machine Learning algorithms to optimize the attitude control strategy. By leveraging Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components and advanced control architectures, this work demonstrates the feasibility of a reliable, low-cost ADCS, enabling long-endurance missions for Earth observation and telecommunications.
