Title of the PhD Project: Development of Risk Assessment Methods for Critical Infrastructure
Supervisor: Prof. Gabriele Landucci
Abstract of the PhD project:
Critical installations are characterized by the presence of hazardous substances and play a strategic role in the functioning of every country. These infrastructures require a high level of attention, as the release of hazardous substances could lead to accidents with severe consequences for people, assets, and the environment. Critical installations include both fixed installations and hazardous materials transport, such as land transport (road and rail), pipelines, inland waterways, and maritime transport. Safety, security, and NaTech events can affect these infrastructures. However, while risk assessment for safety-related events is supported by well-established and quantitative methodologies, current approaches available for security-related risk assessment are mostly qualitative or semi-quantitative.
The aim of this research is to fill this gap and to develop integrated quantitative methodologies for the risk assessment of critical installations, with a particular focus on safety, security, and NaTech events. The expected outcomes of this research include providing a comprehensive framework for risk assessment and management in critical installations, supporting decision-making, and enhancing emergency response in both fixed facilities and hazardous materials transport.
