Title of the PhD Project:

Development of an Ammonia-based Bimodal Nuclear Propulsion System

Supervisors:

Prof. Angelo Pasini, Prof. Valerio Giusti, Dr. Elia Puccinelli

Abstract of the PhD project:

The project investigates the development of a bimodal ammonia-based nuclear propulsion system, in the frame of the European Innovation Council project BANTER (Bimodal Ammonia Nuclear Thermal Electric Rocket), with a specific emphasis on the Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) mode. Ammonia is considered a unified propellant capable of supporting both thermal propulsion and electric power generation, enabling compact and reusable stages for deep space missions. The work focuses primarily on the design, thermo-fluid modelling, and experimental realization of an ammonia-fueled thruster, including catalytic decomposition, packed-bed heat addition, and high-temperature expansion through a nozzle.
