Abstract of the PhD project:

One of the most critical aspects in ensuring the reliability, safety, and long-term durability of SMRs, lies in the mechanical behavior of the systems that convert thermal energy into electrical power, particularly steam turbines and supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) expanders. These components operate under extremely demanding conditions, characterized by high thermal gradients, cyclic loading, and complex mechanical stresses, all of which can compromise their structural integrity over time.
The primary objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the mechanical behavior of the main components of steam turbines and sCO₂ expanders used in SMRs, with a specific focus on low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep phenomena. These two damage mechanisms, which often interact with each other, are responsible for the progressive degradation of materials under cyclic and high-temperature operating conditions.
