Green challenges: sustainable laminate composites development by processes optimization

Abstract of the PhD project:

The research revolves around the green challenge of developing sustainable laminate composites through process optimization. The work focuses on studying natural-based composite laminates, placing considerable emphasis on raw material selection and manufacturing processes. Currently, various types of natural fibres are being investigated for reinforcement, and both thermoplastic and thermoset materials are being explored as matrices. The research adopts a dual approach to optimization, employing distinct methodologies for thermoplastics and thermosets. Utilizing the LUDOVIC software, simulations of the extrusion process have been conducted for thermoplastic matrices, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing extrusion. Conversely, for thermosets, an analysis using finite element analysis will be conducted retrospectively.
