Title of the PhD Project: Boosting flow chemistry through machine learning and process intensification concept

Abstract of the PhD project:

The growing interest in microdevices stems from the possibility of implementing continuous operations with a large control of the operating conditions. The microreactor technology allows to reduce the quantities of reagents, waste, and energy consumption, leading to extremely efficient performances. The PhD project aims to apply process intensification concepts and machine learning techniques to microdevices. In particular, the research activity is focused on the characterization of the laminar flow inside an X-microdevice. First, numerical simulations and experiments are carried out to investigate the flow behavior inside the microdevice fed with reactive streams and to evaluate the mixing and reaction performance. Afterward, machine learning algorithms are used to recognize and classify the flow regimes inside the device. The same microdevice geometry was used to carry out experiments and numerical simulations on two different biphase systems to produce microparticles for drug delivery purposes. Two different production techniques are exploited: the segmentation method and the nanoprecipitation. Alginate particles are produced through the segmentation method, instead, chitosan nanoparticles are made via nanoprecipitation or “Ouzo effect”.
