Title of the PhD Project: Development of Health-Monitoring Algorithms and Power Management Strategies for Hybrid Electric VTOL Aerial Vehicles

Abstract of the PhD project:

Driven by environmental and sustainability concerns, the aeronautical industry is actively transitioning towards adopting more electric aircraft (MEA), with the ultimate goal of achieving all-electric aircraft (AEA). Hybrid electric aircraft serve as a critical stepping stone in this transition, given the current limitations of battery technologies that hinder immediate migration to full electric propulsion. The integration of an internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric motor has proven highly beneficial, offering significant emission reduction, noise mitigation, enhanced health monitoring, and improved efficiency. This hybrid approach effectively leverages the high energy density of fuel alongside the efficiency and reliability of electric motors, aligning closely with global initiatives to enhance aviation sustainability. Furthermore, the growth of urban air mobility and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sectors is rapidly advancing with Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) vehicles, which require minimal runway space compared to conventional aircraft.  Within this context, strategies aimed at optimizing energy management, power distribution between the two propulsion systems, and implementing robust health-monitoring techniques are essential for achieving high performance and overall efficiency in hybrid electric aircraft.
