Title of the PhD Project: Development of methods and models for the assessment of cascading events in process facilities

Supervisor: Prof. Gabriele Landucci

Abstract of the PhD project:

Chemical facilities storing significant quantities of hazardous materials are susceptible to accidental scenarios that could propagate among units, leading to cascading events. These events may stem from process upsets, involving nearby units or external plants, or they could be triggered by external attacks, such as natural events (lightning, flooding, etc.), or intentional events (malevolent agents causing deliberate damage). Cascading events can lead to severe consequences to people, assets, and the environment; moreover, external attacks have intensified in the last years. Despite this, currently available standards are insufficient, and only offer semi-quantitative evaluations; while current regulations mention cascading events, effective technical guidance is lacking.

The research activities aims at addressing cascading events, with a particular focus on external attacks. Methodologies will be developed in order to support the quantitative assessment of risks associated with external attacks and the resulting cascading events. The direction of the research activities is strongly interdisciplinary, reflecting the complex nature of the subject matters. For example, collaboration with scholars in the humanities field is expected to comprehensively understand and model intentional attacks.
